Jakarta (ANTARA) - The General Elections Commission (KPU RI) proposed the 2024 General Elections to be held on Feb 21 of the year during a hearing meeting with the House of Representatives' (DPR RI's) Commission II.

At the meeting, KPU RI Chairperson Ilham Saputra outlined several factors -- candidate registration period, resolution period for electoral disputes, and the date for officiating the election results -- that were taken into account prior to proposing to set the election date to February 21, 2024.

The workload of ad-hoc electoral agencies during the election and religious observance factors had also been taken into account before determining the election date, he noted.

"The 2024 General Elections is the first time that the presidential, parliamentary, and regional elections will take place on the same day, though earlier, we need to review the political parties' eligibility to participate in the elections in accordance with the Electoral Law," Saputra stated during the hearing meeting with the DPR RI.

Chairperson of DPR RI's Commission II Ahmad Doli Kurnia noted that the hearing meeting on Monday was convened to follow up on an earlier meeting's resolution to form a joint team involving the Home Affairs Ministry, the KPU RI, and other electoral institutions to formulate a grand design for the 2024 General Elections.

"We all agree that 2024 is a 'political year' since the year will be full of politically significant events, and it is not easy to organize those events in the packed year," Kurnia stated.

Kurnia expressed hope that the grand design prepared by the joint team would offer solutions to current issues and mitigate other matters in future.

"In the last two months, the joint team has convened several times to deliberate and finalize the grand design for the 2024 General Elections," he stated.

Apart from the KPU RI, Commission II of the DPR RI also invited other electoral institutions, the General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and the Honorary Board of Election Organizers (DKPP) for the hearing meeting on Monday.
