Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chairwoman of the Indonesian Women's Congress (Kowani) Dr. Giwo Rubianto Wiyogo has called for an end to discrimination against women workers in the public sphere.

"What happened to a woman master of ceremony in Bali some time ago was a form of discrimination against female workers in the public sphere. Kowani urges that there be no more discrimination against women workers in public," Wiyogo said here on Monday.

She made the remarks in reference to a recent incident where a woman master of ceremony was forbidden to host a show in Bali.

The incident, which has gone viral, is a violation of Law No. 39 of 1999 on Human Rights, she pointed out. Article 1 paragraph (3) and Article 3 paragraph (3) of the law state that sex-based discrimination is a violation, she said.

Everyone has the right to protection of human rights and basic freedom without discrimination, Wiyogo asserted.

In addition, Indonesia has also ratified the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) through Law No. 7 of 1984, she noted.

The protection of women workers is among the nation's commitments mandated within the law, she said.

The state is obligated to eradicate all forms of discrimination against women, starting from the recruitment process, during the discharge of work duties, at the time of job promotion, capacity improvement, and in the fulfillment of worker's rights, such as salary and paid leave, she added.

"The discriminatory act (reported in Bali) clearly violates the state's commitment to provide protection and fulfill the rights of women workers as has been mandated in Law No. 7 of 1984 on Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women," Wiyogo said.

The discriminatory action also violates the Constitution, Article 5 and 6 of Law No. 13 of 2003 regarding Manpower, and Article 190 (1) of Law No. 11 of 2020 on Job Creation, she added.

"Indonesia's Constitution clearly guarantees freedom for every one of its citizens to take part in all aspects," Wiyogo said.
