Jakarta (ANTARA) - The West Jakarta Environment Office is using black fly larvae in landfills to process organic waste, an official informed here on Monday.

"The processing of organic waste uses maggot or black fly larvae. Hence, it (the waste) is consumed by the larvae," supervisor of the West Jakarta Environment Office, Subarna Martadinata, said.

The effort to reduce organic waste by using black fly larvae has been carried out by the office since 2020, Martadinata, who is also manager of the Satu Hati Waste Bank Socialization Division in Jakarta, informed.

Explaining the process, he said the maggots or larvae of black flies are first placed on organic waste that is ready to be processed.

The larvae then decompose the organic waste in just a few hours, he added.

According to him, the office is deliberately using black fly maggots because they are high in protein.

In addition, black fly maggots can consume objects that are much larger than them in size, he explained.

"We put five kilos of garbage and one kilo of maggots. It is certain that the garbage can be destroyed in one day," he said.

Once they consume the waste, the maggots change their color and become black in a few days, he added. These maggots can be used as food for fish or poultry later, he said.

"The larvae can be the feed for catfish and livestock because their protein content is high," he added.

Every landfill management in eight sub-districts of West Jakarta is using this method of processing organic waste with black flies, Martadinata said.

Not only in sub-districts, he informed, but hamlet residents have also turned to this type of waste processing.

"The larvae are mostly used by the surrounding residents as fish and livestock feed and for other needs," he said.

He said he hopes that the processing of organic waste with similar techniques can give benefits to the community, especially fish and poultry farmers.
