Merauke, Papua (ANTARA) - Papua bagged the gold medal in women's soccer at the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) after defeating West Java with a score of 1-0.

The match was held at the Katalpal Stadium, Merauke District, on Monday. Both teams attacked each other’s defense from the beginning.

West Java threatened its opponent’s goal in the third minute with a corner kick. However, it was saved by Papua goalkeeper Agustina Kwano.

In turn, the host team that was fully supported by the crowd tried to score through Emmy Clarce Falentina Awes' free kick, but West Java goalkeeper Diyana Herliana was able to anticipate the ball.

West Java attacked Papua's defense again through Siti Latipah Nurul Inayah’s shot. Unfortunately, it flew high above the crossbar.

Meanwhile, in the 18th minute, West Java had another opportunity through Helsya Maeisyaroh’s free-kick, but the chance was lost.

The match ran fast and tough and the referee had to blow the whistle several times due to violations made by the players.

In the 45th minute, West Java would have almost scored if only Maeisyaroh's kick had failed to be dispelled by Kwano, who played brilliantly in the first half.

The first half ended with a scoreless draw.

Hence, Papua subbed in two players -- Liza Armanita Madjar and Yuliana Ongge -- at once at the beginning of the second half to strengthen its attack.

The substitution was successful as Madjar scored a beautiful goal from outside the penalty box, which could not be reached by West Java goalkeeper in the 73rd minute.

West Java tried to catch up in the remaining minutes of the second half. However, until the end of the additional time, both the teams created no more goals.

Thus, the match ended 1-0 for Papua's victory.

Meanwhile, the bronze medal was snatched by Bangka Belitung after beating Jakarta with a score of 3-0.
