Jakarta (ANTARA) - Nature conservation efforts were part of the endeavors to tackle climate change, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry emphasized at the commemoration of National Flora and Fauna Day (HCPSN) 2021.

Director General of Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems (KSDAE) Wiratno said in a statement received here on Friday, that the importance of conservation was reflected in the Halimun Salak National Park, a nurtured area located not far from Jakarta.

Conserving the forest in Halimun Salak translates to saving the community, he affirmed.

"A reserved forest in Halimun Salak will save the leopards that are the top predator there, thereby maintaining the food chain up to the level of microbes," he expounded.

The presence of microbes in Halimun Salak benefited the community in the agriculture sector, such as by accelerating the growth of agricultural plant roots and making the forest not only sustainable but also beneficial, Wiratno stated.

Moreover, Wiranto affirmed that the conservation areas contributed to climate change control.

Recently, Indonesia has been bolstering efforts for achieving the FoLU Net Sink by no later than 2030 as well as Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or even sooner.

Wiratno noted that the conservation area supported the achievement of the target.

Well-maintained conserved forests will encourage the absorption and storage of carbon and geothermal energy. The conservation areas turn them into clean energy that is important in controlling climate change, he stated.

The ministry, through the Halimun Salak National Park, held a podcast for discussion focused on the education of plants and animals as well as a wildlife photography exhibition at the Boxies 123 Mall area, Bogor, West Java, on November 3-5, 2021.

"As they are held in malls, I think events like this are very good in order to reach the urban millennial generation on issues of nature conservation, especially animals and plants," he said.

HCPSN, which is commemorated every November 5, is a day when the concern for the protection and preservation of national plants and animals is increased among members of the public. HCPSN was first initiated by former president Suharto in 1993.
