Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is conducting biological research to help the government slash greenhouse gas emissions in the forestry sector.

"The results of our study show that the lack of optimal forest and land rehabilitation is caused by three things," a researcher at BRIN's Research Center for Ecology and Ethnobiology, Chairul Anwar Siregar, said here on Friday.

Poor mastery of knowledge and technology, limited dissemination of information and technology, and lack of community involvement have resulted in barriers to rehabilitating forests and lands, he expounded.

Siregar said his party is providing data and building research collaboration involving 19 research groups to support Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 road map.

Limited knowledge and poor mastery of technology can be seen in the sub-standard preparation of seedlings, land management, and planting and maintenance technology, he pointed out.

He said his research results can be implemented to support forest and land rehabilitation goals.

The research includes an atlas of tree species for forest and land rehabilitation in Indonesia, types of plants and their growth in post-mining areas, nursery technology, and soil and water conservation technology.

The Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 is the government's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the forestry sector.

By 2030, the carbon absorption rate in the forestry and other land uses sector is expected to be equal to or higher than the level of emissions produced.

The FOLU Net Sink 2030 target is directed at reducing emissions by up to 140 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030.

Head of reforestation at the Environment and Forestry Ministry, Junediono, said the management of rehabilitation has been divided into forest rehabilitation, which is under the authority of the central government, and land rehabilitation, which is handled by local governments.
