We have just heard a case in Sulawesi 2-3 weeks ago when the examination system provided by the selection committee was bypassed and hacked
Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia has highlighted the need to improve the security of the digital system used in the national state apparatus recruitment examination to prevent increasingly sophisticated cheating methods.

"We have just heard a case in Sulawesi 2-3 weeks ago when the examination system provided by the selection committee was bypassed and hacked," Ombudsman member Robert Na Endi Jaweng observed in his keynote speech at a webinar hosted by the Ombudsman, accessed online from Jakarta on Monday.

In the hacking case, remote access was gained to a computer desktop during exam, presenting an undesired advantage to targeted test participants who used the computers that were compromised, the Ombudsman member noted.

A commitment from the authority and exam organizers to ensure cyber security during the recruitment is paramount to prevent similar cheating practices from occurring in future exams, Jaweng reiterated.

"Personal integrity among recruitment examination officials is also important," he remarked.

The Ombudsman's acting head of VI Chief Assistance for Report Inspection, Ahmad Sobirin, confirmed the agency had discovered that the system security and encryption for the computer-assisted basic competence test were inadequate and prone to cyber threats.

"This posed an opportunity for test participants or exam organizers to exploit the system weakness for cheating on the test," Sobirin said.

In response to several findings exposing vulnerabilities in the system utilized for the state apparatus recruitment examination, the Ombudsman has urged the National Civil Service Agency (BKN) to establish IT security parameters to tackle system hacking, he added.

The Ombudsman has also highlighted the importance of appointing sufficient and competent members with personal integrity to the selection team to perform technical duties during the recruitment examination, Sobirin said.
