We should commemorate International Disability Day not only by mere ceremonies but also by showcasing crafts made by the disabled community that have the same quality as products made by those, who are not disabled
Jakarta (ANTARA) - An exhibition organized by the Social Affairs Ministry on December 1-3, 2021, to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities showcased crafts and products created by the disabled community.

"We should commemorate International Disability Day not only by mere ceremonies but also by showcasing crafts made by the disabled community that have the same quality as products made by those, who are not disabled," Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini said at a press conference on Wednesday.

The minister expressed her commitment to eradicating discrimination against people with disability in communication, transportation, and workplaces. The ministry will also ensure the provision of accessible facilities wherever they go, she added.

"I have a dream that there will be no discrimination against a person with disability. If they want to study in regular schools, then they must be accommodated to learn wherever they want by providing the required facilities," Rismaharini stated.

The minister reasserted her willingness to supporting all efforts to assuage difficulties often faced by people with disability while pointing out a special wheelchair for people with cerebral palsy being currently available.

"I am also requesting that an electric walking stick be made for visually impaired people to facilitate them to have an independent life and reduce dependence on others," she said.

The exhibition showcased various crafts made by disabled communities in Indonesia, such as canvas paintings, scarf paintings, and handmade crafts, Rismaharini stated.

The minister also confirmed that the organizer, on the second and third day of the exhibition, would invite members of the disabled community to allow them to showcase their expertise in creating intricate crafts to the audience.

"I observe that several products made by the disabled community have a superior quality," she pointed out.
