This is the momentum and potential for Indonesia to dip into the electric vehicle industry
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of Presidential Staff Moeldoko accentuated that Indonesia has vast potential to become self-sufficient in developing its own electric vehicle industry.

"Motor, battery, and controller are three important aspects related to the electric car industry," Moeldoko stated during a visit to the Sebelas Maret University, Solo, Central Java on Tuesday.

However, Indonesia still depends on imports for those three fundamental areas, he noted.

Moeldoko expects this dependence to end at the earliest, as the university has made advancements in research and development for battery technology. On the other hand, the Surabaya Institute of Technology is currently in the research development stage.

"We need a strategic partner, so that the results of research can be implemented on an industrial scale," he noted.

Moeldoko highlighted that Indonesia had the largest reserves of nickel and cobalt in the world, with both serving as the basic materials for making batteries.

He also highlighted that President Joko Widodo remained highly committed to COP26 that addresses world climate change through emission regulation. Given this notion, Jokowi would strongly support development of the renewable industry.

"This is the momentum and potential for Indonesia to dip into the electric vehicle industry," he remarked.

Rector at the Sebelas Maret University Professor Jamal Widodo noted that research and development into the university's electricity storage technology had commenced since 2012 and had been tested for electric bicycles, motorcycles, and electric cars.

"Seeing the PUI for lithium batteries first-hand, which have been developed several years ago, we are optimistic that development for this (PUI for lithium batteries) would continue in future," Widodo stated.

Head of Presidential Staff Moeldoko and Rector of the Sebelas Maret University Professor Jamal Wiwoho observed the PUI-PT Laboratory of Electrical Energy Storage Technology, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS).
