Until now, no reports were received of damage caused by the earthquake. The modeling results showed that this earthquake did not potentially cause a tsunami
Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 5.1-magnitude tectonic earthquake struck the southern regions of East Java and Bali at 12:46 p.m. local time due to a medium-level quake from a subduction zone activity.

The quake's epicenter was located at 9.69 degrees South latitude and 113.57 degrees East longitude, or precisely coming from sea, at a distance of 167 km south of Jember City, East Java, at a depth of 73 km.

"The results of the source mechanism analysis showed that the earthquake had a horizontal movement mechanism (strike-slip)," Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency's (BMKG's) Earthquake and Tsunami Center Head, Setiyo Prayitno, noted in a statement received here on Monday.

The earthquake was felt in Kuta, Bali, with an intensity of Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) III, which means the vibrations were felt in houses or the quake was described as a truck passing by.

Meanwhile, in Jember, East Java, the intensity was recorded at MMI II to III. In Denpasar, North Kuta, Karangasem, Pacitan, Trengalek, Lumajang, Blitar, Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, and Malang, it was felt at MMI II, or the vibrations could be felt by some people and hung light objects swayed.

"Until now, no reports were received of damage caused by the earthquake. The modeling results showed that this earthquake did not potentially cause a tsunami," Prayitno explained.

He also reported that until 13:20 p.m. local time, based on BMKG's monitoring results, no aftershocks occurred.

The agency urged the public to remain calm and not be affected by false information. It also suggested avoiding buildings, with cracks or damage, due to earthquakes.
