Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Selayar Islands District Government in South Sulawesi declared an emergency status after a 7.4 magnitude (M) earthquake that hit on Tuesday morning damaged several hundred houses and public facilities in the region.

Acting Head of the Data Center on Disaster Information and Communication of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Abdul Muhari made the statement in a press release here on Wednesday.

Muhari remarked that the emergency status will be in force on December 14-27, 2021.

The Selayar Islands District Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded that, as of Wednesday at 9 a.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), the disaster had caused minor injuries to five people while inflicted severe injuries to one person.

In addition, 134 houses were severely damaged, while another 211 had incurred minor damages.

The disaster also caused destruction to three school buildings, two mosques, a village head’s official residence, a port, a community hall, and two warehouses.

Furthermore, the regional agency noted that at least 3,900 residents had taken refuge in 17 camps.

They comprised six camps in Mintu’u that accommodated two thousand refugees; six camps in Lambego, with 900 refugees; three camps in Larawu, with 500 refugees; one camp in Puncak Majapahit, with 250 refugees; and one camp in Langundi, with 50 refugees.

Meanwhile, the rest of them sought refuge in 30 camps in Pasilambena Sub-district. However, the Selayar Islands District BPBD is still in the process of arriving at the exact count of refugees in the sub-district.

Apart from the district BPBD, the provincial BPBDs in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi provinces were also recording the impact of the earthquake in their respective regions.

The South Sulawesi Provincial BPBD has sent aid for mitigating the impact of the disaster in the Selayar Islands District.

Meanwhile, in Sikka District, NTT Province, it was reported that 26 residents took shelter in the regent's official residence.

Furthermore, BNPB’s Operations Control Center noted that no casualties due to the earthquake were reported as of Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. WIB.
