Jakarta (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali pinned high hopes on Indonesian Olympians contributing to achieving goals set in the Grand Design for National Sports.

"The government needs contributions, inputs, and suggestions from former Olympic athletes because they have made history with the achievements they recorded during the Olympic Games," the minister noted in his remarks to open the 5th Indonesia Olympian Association (IOA) national conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The grand design designated Olympics as the ultimate goal for national sports coaching and encouraged coaching for sports disciplines relying on technique and accuracy to achieve more accolades, he affirmed.

"We must design our way to mold our champions. As we currently have the Grand Design for National Sports, we want the development of our national sport to be better and Olympics-orientated," Amali noted.

The minister called for expediting the development of sports included in the grand design, as the authority will implement the promotion and degradation system in the development of sports.

Amali also lauded parties contributing to the common mission of advancing national sports.

In accordance with the grand design, some 11 provinces have been designated to host training centers for athletes, the minister noted while reiterating the importance of regional leadership support in achieving the goals set in the grand design.

"Regional leaders have welcomed the grand design, and this means they must commit to supporting the grand design with all potentials provided by their region," Amali remarked.

He also noted that regional authorities had sought assistance from the central government to provide sports facilities to ensure a unified standard in developing national sports and athletes.

Meanwhile, IOA Chairperson Yayuk Basuki expressed gratitude for the minister's effort in developing national sports and reaffirmed the Olympians’ determination to contribute to advancing national sports and athletes.

"We express our gratitude for the youth and sports minister's presence at this event. We are optimistic that the national meeting would be beneficial for us, and we affirm our determination to contribute and support the government," Basuki stated.
