Jakarta (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta city government is expediting vaccination during the holidays for as many as 242 thousand children in the age bracket of 6-11 years targeted in the program.

According to South Jakarta Mayor Munjirin, his administration confirmed that 56 percent, or some 136 thousand children, had received the COVID-19 vaccine of the Sinovac brand.

"There is still quite a lot that we are pursuing. Hence, every day, although we are off on Saturday and Sunday, we still hold the vaccination program at schools and non-school locations as well as in public places," Munjirin remarked here on Friday.

The mayor stated that vaccination apart from being held in schools aimed to facilitate more people, so they could bring their children for inoculation.

"This is because they might have an activity or be visiting a relative's place," he noted.

Munjirin urged everyone to contribute in order to make the vaccination program a success. The mayor opined that the government could not singlehandedly conduct it, as assistance from community organizations was also required.

He lauded the vaccination conducted at the Bakti Mulya 400 Elementary School, which was hosted in collaboration with the South Jakarta Golkar Party DPD.

The mayor expects other educational units in South Jakarta to also conduct similar activities, so that the target of child vaccination could be met.

The central government aims to vaccinate a large percentage of Indonesian citizens to create herd immunity against COVID-19. To this end, the vaccination target has been increased. As of December 14, the government had begun vaccinating children in the age bracket of six to 11 years. Moreover, they promoted booster vaccines to further reinforce immunity for those, who already received the complete dose of vaccines.
