The number of positive cases in Indonesia has increased in the past two weeks
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The number of positive COVID-19 cases in Indonesia has shown signs of an increase in the past couple of weeks, the COVID-19 Handling Task Force has informed.

"The number of positive cases in Indonesia has increased in the past two weeks," spokesperson for the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, Prof. Wiku Adisasmito, said at an online press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.

In two weeks, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has risen from 1,200 to 1,400, he informed. The figure reached three thousand in the past week, or more than double compared to the previous week.

He underscored the need for anticipatory measures to address the upward trend in COVID-19 cases.

The number COVID-19 infections may increase in the upcoming weeks after the Christmas and New Year holidays, the more so because the number of positive cases has surpassed the number of recoveries, he predicted.

For example, on January 6, 2022, the number of daily positive cases reached 553, while the number of recoveries stood at 209, he added.

"In fact, in the previous three weeks, despite the fluctuating trend, in general, the number of recoveries was higher than the number of positive cases. Of course, this serves as a (warning) note for us," he said.

To deal with the situation, the government needs in-depth investigation and analysis of COVID-19 variants that are currently circulating in the community, he added.

Data and knowledge related to the characteristics of transmission, clinical symptoms, treatment duration, and risk of death have become important inputs for the formulation of policies, he noted.

To obtain these inputs, valid, credible, and real-time data need to be provided by each health facility while reporting case development, he said.
