Jakarta (ANTARA) - Citizens must identify safe spaces inside their homes where they can take shelter in the eventuality of a quake, a researcher from the Geotechnology Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has said.



"This safe space could be a room like a bedroom or a bathroom that has a bolstered structure, which makes it resilient against an earthquake," Eko Yulianto told ANTARA here on Wednesday.



The safe space could also be realized by utilizing strengthened furniture such as dining tables, desks, or beds, which could be used as protection against falling rubble when an earthquake occurs, he said.



Citizens must pay attention to aspects concerning earthquake disaster risk, specifically in buildings, he added.



According to Yulianto, the quality of houses and public buildings owned by people is quite poor, which makes them highly vulnerable to even small-scale earthquakes.

Therefore, people must always be ready, such as by identifying a safe space inside their houses or public buildings that they could use to protect themselves when an earthquake strikes, he explained.



People living on beaches or nearby areas must learn to gauge the signs of an earthquake that could potentially trigger a tsunami, Yulianto said.



One sign is an earthquake that lasts for more than 30 seconds, whether strong or weak, he informed. Such an earthquake has a high possibility of triggering a tsunami, he added.

"If you feel this, please self-evacuate immediately," he appealed.



Earthquakes can happen at night and their frequency may not be quite strong, he noted. To this end, people could prepare a simple early warning device, he said.



Such an early warning device could be in the form of a can filled with pebbles that produces a loud noise when it falls or when shaken by an earthquake, he suggested.
