Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), the largest Muslim-based organization in Indonesia, has summoned its branch managers in Banyuwangi and Sidoarjo Districts to clarify alleged involvement in practical politics through their support for a presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.

"At the request from the General Chairperson of PBNU K.H. Yahya Cholil Staquf, we have officially summoned the chairman of NU branch (PCNU) for Banyuwangi and Sidoarjo regions," PBNU Chairman Amin Said Husni said in a written statement received here on Sunday.

The summons was stated in an official letter signed by the Chairman of PBNU Amin Said Husni and Deputy Secretary General Nur Hidayat.

The chairman of Banyuwangi PCNU was summoned after the executive board received a report on a political event related to the 2024 Presidential Election that involved the NU branch in Banyuwangi. The activity was held at the branch's office on Wednesday (Jan 19) by inviting one of the presidential candidates.

Meanwhile the Sidoarjo PCNU was summoned based on a report on activities initiated by the Sidoarjo branch of the National Awakening Party (PKB) and involved the Nahdlatul Ulama Branch Assembly (MWCNU) of Sidoarjo District.

The Chairpersons of NU branches in Banyuwangi and Sidoarjo were asked to make written and complete reports on the events and send it directly to the General Chairperson of PBNU K.H. Yahya Cholil Staquf.

NU has returned to its khittah in the 27th Congress of Nahdlatul Ulama in 1984 in Situbondo, East Java.

However, the NU did not ban its cadres to be politicians. The largest Muslim-based organization in Indonesia also let Nahdliyin or its followers to choose candidates based on their own desire.
