Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - The number of active COVID-19 cases in Riau Islands Province rose 16 to 58 on Sunday, the local COVID-19 handling task force informed.

The additional 16 active COVID-19 cases comprised 14 in Batam and one in Tanjungpinang and Karimun each, Spokesman for the COVID-19 Handling Task Force Tjetjep Yudiana said.

The total number of active cases was recorded at 33 in Batam, 10 in Tanjungpinang, seven in Bintan, three in Karimun, and five in Natuna, he said.

"The number of active COVID-19 cases increases everyday. Right now only six out of 58 active cases are Omicron cases,"he said.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic , the virus has infected 53,977 people in Riau Islands, comprising 25,988 in Batam, 10,243 in Tanjungpinang, 5,592 in Bintan, 5,498 in Karimun, 1,846 in Anambas, 2,310 in Lingga and 2,500 in Natuna.

More than 52,160 patients recovered from the virus comprising 25,113 in Batam, 9,831 in Tanjungpinang, 5,405 in Bintan, 5,334 in Karimun, 1,799 in Anambas, 2,225 in Lingga and 2,453 in Natuna.

The total number of patients succumbing to the virus reached 1,759, comprising 842 in Batam, 402 in Tanjungpinang, 180 in Bintan, 161 in Karimun, 47 in Anambas, 85 in Lingga and 42 in Natuna.

"We call on all people to consistently follow health protocols and avoid crowds,"he said.
