Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir affirmed that the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs of government enterprises would focus on the education, environment, and MSMEs empowerment sectors to promote sustainable community development.

"Our decision to focus on the three sectors aims to address the real issues that occur in Indonesia and to ensure that our contribution would promote sustainable community development," Thohir noted during an online press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.

The minister highlighted that the young generation, which constitutes majority of the Indonesian population, should be empowered by proffering educational benefits, such as scholarships.

"We have synergized ourselves with the Finance Ministry's Educational Fund Management Institution (LPDP) activities to support our young generation to face changes and challenges in the future," Thohir remarked.

In account of the importance of environmental sustainability, the ministry is committed to allocating CSR to environmental programs that will benefit the environment, the people's economy, and addressing climate change issues, he remarked.

Thohir cited the example of the tree-planting programs hosted by state-owned enterprises that apart from intending to protect the environment must also aim to benefit the people's economy.

"We have implemented that in the Lake Toba area by planting macadamia trees that can produce nuts of high value. The trees not only provide oxygen and benefit the environment but will also economically benefit the locals," the minister remarked.

He also encouraged state-owned enterprises to allocate their CSR to assist MSMEs to prevent the enterprises from lagging behind despite being an established business and having sufficient operational capital.

"In essence, we are making efforts to develop the ecosystem. Apart from transforming the human capital and the business model, we also develop the CSR programs to ensure the program's continuity to benefit the people," Thohir remarked.
