This means (finding a solution to) the problem lies in our hands, and all parties and stakeholders must involve themselves to take actionJakarta (ANTARA) - Waste awareness should be fostered among residents, either in a personal capacity or through public collaboration, in order to reduce and control waste volume in the province, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated.
"This means (finding a solution to) the problem lies in our hands, and all parties and stakeholders must involve themselves to take action," Baswedan noted in a statement delivered to commemorate 2022 National Waste Awareness Day here on Monday.
The governor emphasized that if waste management is started from the upstream level, then the waste volume would be significantly reduced, and the waste control process would become more convenient.

Baswedan also lauded non-governmental institutions that have partaken in efforts to enhance awareness and promote the sorting of household waste among residents as well as extend their waste-sorting efforts for the transport of garbage to landfills.
"The collaboration must not only involve non-governmental organisations, academics, or the private sector but families and households must also partake in this action. We are also optimistic of enhancing public awareness (regarding this issue)," Baswedan remarked.
Baswedan, who earlier served as minister of education and culture, highlighted that the decision to not place rubbish bins in means of public transportation, such as MRT trains, is a deliberate attempt to nurture waste awareness and control, as residents could only discard their trash after disembarking from the train.

"We must not perceive all places in the Earth as a rubbish bin," the governor stressed.
The governor expounded that the provincial authority had delivered an average of 7,800 tons of garbage daily to the Bantargebang landfill in Bekasi, West Java.
"If we want this city to be a zero-waste city, it would be impossible if only one person is working for it. We need to work for it together through a collaborative process," Baswedan emphasized.
