Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi drew attention to several factors causal to the high number of road traffic accidents, including weather-related factors and land transportation facilities and infrastructure.

During the Focus Group Discussion regarding Experts of Road Transportation Safety Session here on Wednesday, Sumadi pointed to the high number of traffic accidents involving public transport vehicles, both in goods and passenger transportation.

"The traffic accidents that occurred certainly cannot be separated from the current extreme climate and weather conditions as well as several factors that affect road safety, including the traffic culture, driver competence, understanding of regulations, and conditions of land transportation infrastructure," he remarked.

Sumadi later noted that the essence of traffic safety and road transportation lies in everyone being protected from the risk of accidents on the road.

However, road transportation safety also needs to be balanced with the active involvement and participation of related parties, comprising service users, owners, and operators, as well as the government as a regulator of the transportation system, he explained.

He also emphasized the importance of conducive and sustainable inter-stakeholder relationships to support traffic and transportation safety. This refers to Presidential Instruction Number 4 of 2013 on the Decade of Action for Road Safety.

"This has become a reference for all of us in synergizing the preparation of documents planning, implementing, and controlling traffic safety and road transportation," he stated.
