Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government fully supports expediting the migration from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles (EV) in Indonesia and the development of creative economy in the automotive sector in general, People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo said.

"The President’s Regulation encourages us to expedite the migration from fossil fuel cars to electric vehicles and suppress the subsidy that has become the state budget's burden," he noted during an event here on Saturday.

The regulation he referred to is Presidential Regulation No. 55 of 2019 on Expediting Battery-based Electric Vehicles, which was issued on August 12, 2019.

The regulation is deemed the initial regulation that will act as a legal umbrella for Indonesia's electric vehicle development.

"This spirit is what makes the government today facilitate youths keen to create and build electric vehicles," he noted during the 2022 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) hybrid event.

Several universities in Indonesia have already conducted research, created automotive products, and performed trials, he added.

"All that is left is the development and production," Soesatyo remarked.

He said he expects that the regulatory easing from the government as well as youngsters' creativity can encourage the development of the national automotive industry and even lead to local mass production of vehicles.

"The government will provide support in the form of searching for investors and through the government's fund," he explained.

He said that he believes that Indonesia is capable of creating and producing domestic cars.

In terms of creative economy, a regulation has been proposed by the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry and Transportation Ministry concerning the innovation and legality of modified products.

The Tourism and Creative Economy Minister is eager to bring the automotive creative industry under his ministry along with the Transportation Ministry, wherein there will be a responsibility concerning the legality of products from creative economy modification, Soesatyo said.
