All preparations and anticipatory measures must be readied well and immediately by the government, so that people can partake in the exodus safely. Prepare for the worst-case scenario if there are heavy traffic jams beyond expected
Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has called on the government to prepare precautionary measures for the 2022 Eid homecoming exodus, especially for handling likely heavy traffic congestion.

"All preparations and anticipatory measures must be readied well and immediately by the government, so that people can partake in the exodus safely. Prepare for the worst-case scenario if there are heavy traffic jams beyond expected," Maharani noted in her statement here on Tuesday.

The DPR speaker remarked that for handling the Eid exodus, relevant ministries and agencies should prepare adequate infrastructure and facilities for the homecomers.

According to Maharani, good preparations are deemed necessary to prevent major traffic jams, such as the traffic congestion that lasted for 20 hours on a toll road and caused fatalities during the 2016 Eid exodus earlier.

She also appealed to security forces to cooperate with health workers at the posts provided for the Eid homecoming exodus, including at train stations, ports, airports, bus terminals, and on land routes.

The house speaker called on the people to take into account the best time to depart in connection with the projection that the Eid exodus will peak on April 28-30, 2022.

She lauded the government that had allowed children and adolescents below 18 years of age to join the Eid exodus without the need to take a COVID-19 test as long as they have received two vaccine doses.

She expressed optimism that as people already have higher antibody levels, the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Indonesia would continue to improve, so that people can gather with their families in their hometowns safely.

For the 2022 Eid al-Fitr, the Indonesian government has allowed people to travel to their hometowns to celebrate Eid on account of an improvement in the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Prospective travelers have been urged to complete primary vaccinations and get a booster dose prior to embarking on the homecoming trip.

The Ministry of Transportation has projected that 85.5 million citizens, or 31.6 percent of the total population, will take part in the 2022 Eid homecoming exodus.
