Jakarta (ANTARA) - South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol received Indonesia's fifth president, Megawati Soekarnoputri, at the South Korean Presidential Palace in Seoul on Wednesday morning.

Megawati had earlier attended the inauguration ceremony of President Yoon, who succeeded Moon Jae-in as South Korea's president, at the South Korean Presidential Palace, according to a press statement.

During the visit, Megawati was accompanied by Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Gandi Sulistyanto, General Treasurer of the PDI-P Olly Dondokambey, Chairman of the PDI-P Executive Board Rokhmin Dahuri, and PDI-P Director of Foreign Relations Hanjaya Setiawan.

Megawati conveyed greetings from President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to President Yoon.

"On this auspicious occasion, I, personally, and my family, and on behalf of President Joko Widodo, would like to once again congratulate you on becoming the 20th President of South Korea," Megawati stated.

Megawati told Yoon that with President Jokowi's permission, she had gone to South Korea.

"He (President Jokowi) personally said: 'My best regards (to President Yoon) and please convey my invitation (to Yoon) for a visit to Indonesia one day,'" Megawati told Yoon during their meeting held following the inauguration ceremony.

Yoon responded to the invitation by expressing his gratitude to Jokowi.

"I am very grateful and please convey my gratitude to the President (Jokowi)," he remarked.

Yoon said that it was an honor for him to meet Megawati, who had long contributed to promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Megawati has long established close relations with South Korea, the new President of South Korea remarked.

He expressed optimism that Megawati would always be willing to give attention and support to South Korea, the world's 10th economic power and also one of the major foreign investors in Indonesia.

South Korea and Indonesia have both gone through a tortuous historical journey and succeeded in achieving democracy and recording economic development, according to Yoon.

"Indonesia is the only country in the ASEAN region that is a special partner for South Korea. For half a century, Indonesia and South Korea have made a big leap in the field of cooperation," he remarked.

This year, Indonesia holds the presidency of G20. Next year, Indonesia will host the ASEAN Summit, he remarked.

"In connection with these two aspects, we hope that Indonesia would continue to showcase its leadership as well as provide support and attention to South Korea," Yoon remarked.
