This phenomenon makes Indonesia more prone to the risk of natural disasters, for sureJakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Moeldoko expects the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) forum to put forward solutions to deal with the threatening risk of climate change.
In a written statement received here on Tuesday, Moeldoko drew attention to a decline in the indicators of disaster preparedness of Indonesia and countries in Pacific regions, particularly against the risk of climate change.
"This phenomenon makes Indonesia more prone to the risk of natural disasters, for sure," he stated.
The KSP chief opined that the impact of climate change had altered the form of threat to a country.
Climate change would impact the environment as well as the defense and security system of a state, both at the national and global scope.
"The concept of national security is not only to maintain sovereignty and territorial integrity but also to (ensure) safety of human beings," he noted.
Moeldoko seconded the view of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who stated that ending the COVID-19 pandemic might be easier than addressing climate change issues.
He also expects that activities, such as the forum, can encourage better global cooperation of the government and community in mitigating the risk of natural disasters, especially the impact of global climate change.
"The meeting of thousands of delegates, scientists, and disaster experts from 193 countries at the GPDRR must be able to produce (real) solutions," he added.
The 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction forum will be hosted in Nusa Dua, Bali, on May 23-28, 2022.
The participants were from 193 countries, with some four thousand people, who would attend the forum in person, while two thousand participants would join through virtual means.
The GPDRR forum is a global platform to evaluate challenges and issues in disaster risk reduction and to accelerate progress towards disaster resilience and sustainable development.
As the host, Indonesia has brought up the theme of "From Risk to Resilience: Towards Sustainable Development for Everyone in a World Changed by COVID-19" based on the country's capability in handling and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic situation that poses systemic risks.
