Jakarta (ANTARA) - National Police Traffic Corps' Director of Registration and Identification Brigadier General Yusri Yunus advised residents to not rush to use the new license plates with white base by purchasing unauthorized plates on online marketplaces.

Yunus noted that license plates, with a white base, would be available free of charge to vehicle owners that fulfilled their vehicle tax obligations.

"Residents need not hurry (to use the white license plate), and they must follow the regulations. Why are they so eager to change to using the new plate by buying it online? Only the police is authorized to issue license plates, so do not buy them online," Yunus told ANTARA here on Tuesday.

He noted that the police-issued white license plate has better specifications and made of finer materials.

The traffic corps director warned that residents found using unauthorized license plates can be sanctioned according to Article 280 of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Traffic and Road Transportation.

"We advise residents against purchasing the plate online because the plate specification (available online) is not consistent with regulations. (Residents that use unauthorized license plates) can be penalized and sanctioned. Please, be patient," Yunus remarked.

He confirmed that the authority would expedite efforts to phase in license plates with a white base that are targeted to start this year.

“(The new license plate) will be phased in during 2022 but not in June. The faster, the better," he remarked.

Earlier, the Traffic Corps confirmed that the color scheme for license plates would be inverted, from a black base to a white base this year.

The new white license plate will be available for vehicles that have been newly purchased, vehicles that have paid the five-year tax, vehicles registered in new regions, and vehicles registered with custom plate numbers.

One rationale for the redesigning of license plates is allowing easier detection of license plates by electronic traffic cameras, according to the Head of the National Police's public information bureau of the public relations division, Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan.

"The changes will enhance the effectiveness of the electronic traffic law enforcement (ETLE) traffic camera system," Ramadhan stated at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Monday (Jan 24).
