Hence, 14 days before the D-day (Eid al-Adha), the disease incubation period, we expect that the livestock to be slaughtered have all been registered and received appropriate health treatment as per procedures
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo confirmed that the authority had readied a special procurement procedure for livestock that will be ritually slaughtered during Eid al-Adha to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

"Hence, 14 days before the D-day (Eid al-Adha), the disease incubation period, we expect that the livestock to be slaughtered have all been registered and received appropriate health treatment as per procedures," Limpo stated here on Wednesday.

Limpo noted that the ministry had readied 1.7 million livestock for the Qurban ritual this year, an increase from 1.6 million livestock during last year's Eid al-Adha.

The authority has also marked regions safe from FMD to be the main source of livestock for the ritual slaughter, he noted.

"To prepare for Eid al-Adha this year, we have increased the livestock number, from 1.6 million last year to 1.7 million. We have also mapped regions that could be the source (of the livestock) and that the regions must be in the green zone," Limpo remarked while referring to the grouping of red, yellow, and green areas to categorise regions with FMD cases.

The ministry has also revved up the dissemination of information to livestock merchants and farmers to recognise symptoms of FMD in livestock, he stated.

The minister then expressed hope that merchants, health experts, and the central and regional authorities would all work in unison to control the spread of FMD.

Residents, merchants, and farmers must stay calm, as the livestock disease can be prevented and healed through proper treatment and intervention, he affirmed.

Limpo also advised residents as consumers to refrain from consuming parts of animals prone to being infected with FMD, such as foot, tongue, lips, and inner organs for the time being.

The minister noted that the meat of livestock infected with the disease can be consumed safely as long as it is properly prepared and cooked prior to consumption.
