The governments of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) and South Korea have committed to strengthening their partnership in the marine and fishery sector, particularly for ensuring the quality of products.

"Indonesia and South Korea have a good history in maritime and fishery cooperation, including in fish trade relations," Marine Affairs and Fishery Ministry official, Hari Maryadi, said during a virtual bilateral meeting, according to a press release issued on Monday.



This commitment was demonstrated during the meeting between the ministry and South Korea's National Fishery Products Quality Management Service (NFQS).



In an effort to maintain the quality and security of fishery yields, the two institutions have formed a bilateral cooperation since September 2, 2016.



The two institutions agreed to formalize the Arrangement on the Cooperation in Quality Control and Hygiene Safety of Import and Export Fish and Fishery Products.

They also lauded and acknowledged the fishery results security and quality assurance system implemented within their respective countries.



Moreover, during the meeting, the two institutions discussed the latest developments related to fish commodity and fishery result trade.



They also discussed technical changes that may occur within the fish commodity and fishery result trade between them, Maryadi explained.



The ministry is continuing to develop communication and seek the best solution that mutually benefits the ministry and the NFQS in bolstering trade and friendship between the two countries, he informed.

Currently, the ministry has the main duty of preventing the emergence and spread of fish diseases as well as monitoring food and feed that do not adhere to the quality and security standards, he added.



In addition, it is also handling and monitoring Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) products.



"This is the mandate from Law No. 21 of 2019 on Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine," he elaborated.
