Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono explained in his statement here on Wednesday that the construction of the flats is to offer alternative housing for workers at the Batang Integrated Industrial Estate.
"This is clear evidence that the government is present in providing decent housing. We hope (the housing) can improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries by having a more decent, healthy, and comfortable home," Hadimuljono said.
He added that the flats can make the workers' mobility more efficient, thus increasing their productivity.
Some ten towers of flats, barracks type, in the Batang industrial zone are being built in an area of 5,735 sq m, to accommodate many workers, Hadimuljono said.
Meanwhile, the ministry's Director General of Housing, Iwan Suprijanto, said he hoped that the utilization and designation of these flats will be according to the plans.
"The construction of these flats is expected to encourage the development of the (Batang) Integrated Industrial Estate in Central Java," Suprijanto said.
Each of the flat towers is designated to have five floors that can house 257 people, he added.
The development of the workers' accommodation is sourced from the ministry's state budget of Rp351 billion, he added.
According to the ministry's data recorded by the e-monitoring system on Wednesday, the progress of the construction has been following the work plan, with Package I reaching 93 percent, Package II 87 percent, and Package III 80 percent.
Furthermore, according to Director of Flats Aswin Grandiarto Sukahar, the government also provides public facilities to support the residents' comfort, such as residential roads, clean water and sanitation networks, places of worship, and sports facilities.
