Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Agriculture Minister has laid down procedures for handling livestock offered as Eid al-Adha sacrifice, which are aimed at minimizing the impact and spread of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Indonesia.

Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Agriculture Ministry Nasrullah said that the sacrificial animals are being imported from areas free of FMD and not from districts and cities where FMD spread is rampant, according to an official release received here on Friday.

"The animals come from (safe and secure) areas, and not from district or city areas that are included in the red zone, as in confirmed of FMD outbreak based on laboratory results," he added.

Moreover, the ministry is also conducting route engineering for charting the distribution path for sacrificial animals to Java as well as the land route in Java in order to prevent the disease from spreading further.

It is also collecting data and disseminating information about FMD to vendors selling sacrificial animals and has established animal health checkpoints in places selling sacrificial animals. The efforts are being conducted by all district and city offices.

Nasrullah said that his administration has also issued technical instructions for Eid slaughter amid the outbreak, which could be followed in all regions. The National Ulema Council (MUI) has issued a fatwa and instructions regarding the criteria for animals that can be sacrificed during the outbreak.

As of June 10, 2022, at least 2,205,660 sacrificial animals for Eid al-Adha were available across Indonesia, comprising cows, buffalos, goats, and sheep.

It has been estimated that 1,814,402 heads of livestock are needed for sacrifice—696,574 cows, 19,652 buffalos, 733,784 goats, and 364,393 sheep, he informed.

"This projection takes into account the increase in the number of slaughtered sacrificial animals by 5 to 10 percent (compared to) the number of slaughters last year, (that is) in 2021," he added.
