"The number of public transport passengers during the Eid al-Fitr holiday this year increased, from the figures recorded in 2020 and 2021, though decreased as compared to 2019 or before the pandemic," Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi stated at a working meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) here on Monday.
The number of public transport passengers during the 2019 Eid holiday totaled 16.84 million, while in 2022, the figure was recorded at 13.04 million, he remarked.
Passenger traffic in the road transportation sector decreased by 34 percent, from 4.4 million people in 2019, to 2.9 million people in 2022.
Eid vacationers using ferry decreased by 9.5 percent, with the number of passengers in 2019 reaching as many as 4.1 million to 3.7 million people in 2022.
In the air transportation sector, the number of passengers fell by 25.6 percent, from 4.2 million people in 2019, to 3.1 million people in 2022.
The number of boat and ship passengers also dropped by 1.97 percent, from 1.21 million people in 2019 to 1.19 million people in 2022.
He remarked that the number of train passengers also decreased by 28.3 percent, from 2.82 million people in 2019, to 2.06 million people in 2022.
"There were certain days when the number of passengers was higher than that in 2019. We conducted many operations at terminals, main toll gates, ports, airports, train stations, and so on. We managed all those optimally," he affirmed.
The minister of transportation remarked that in general, implementation of the 2022 Eid transportation went smoothly, though further evaluation and improvement were deemed necessary.
Essential improvements comprised the need for additional rest areas, disseminating information on alternative non-toll roads, increasing bus transportation facilities, making special docks for transporting goods, studying the Jakarta-Semarang route regularly using ships, increasing train facilities, and optimizing aircraft operations.
