Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, (in the name of God), and by the blessing of the Almighty God, I name this corvette ship as KRI Bung Karno
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's fifth president Megawati Soekarnoputri officiated the naming of an Indonesian Navy corvette ship, anointed as KRI Bung Karno, as a mark of homage to Indonesia's first president, Soekarno.

"Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, (in the name of God), and by the blessing of the Almighty God, I name this corvette ship as KRI Bung Karno," Megawati stated while officiating the naming of the ship by symbolically punching a button during a ceremony here on Monday.

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Yudo Margono accompanied Soekarnoputri while officiating the naming of the corvette ship based on Soekarno's affectionate term, Bung (Brother) Karno.

Margono stated that the decision to name the ship Bung Karno aims to pay homage to the first president, who had a strong national maritime vision and was the pioneer of the Indonesian Navy's armaments concept.

"Bung Karno was a major national figure, with a strong maritime vision. He aspired to make the Indonesian nation a true maritime country. Bung Karno also inspired us because he was the pioneer of the current Navy's armaments concept," the admiral expounded.

He noted that Soekarno had conceived the Combined Fleet Weapons System as the current Navy's armaments concept that encompassed warships, navy aviation, marines, and naval bases.

"Other national navies have no such concept. Only the Indonesian Navy, thanks to Bung Karno, has the concept," the chief of staff pointed out.

Margono then drew attention to a picture shown before the ceremony venue that depicted the close relations between Indonesia's first president and the Indonesian Navy.

"After we see the picture at the front, it turned out that the Navy armaments concept that comprises warships, warplanes, marines, and naval bases was conceived by him (Soekarno)," Margono remarked.

He emphasized the need for the public to know that the Navy’s current armaments doctrine was conceived by Soekarno, Megawati's father.

After officiating the naming of the corvette ship, Megawati handed over a Soekarno painting to Margono, who reciprocated the gesture by handing over a miniature of the corvette ship.
