Jakarta (ANTARA) - The third G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) meeting focuses on cross-border data flow and fair utilization of data amid global digital transformation, Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate stated.

This topic will be discussed to create a beneficial digital space and to have data, with high economic value, while also considering the element of data sovereignty, he noted here on Monday.

G20 is an international forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union that work together to handle major issues. Indonesia is holding presidency of the grouping this year.

The DEWG, one of the working groups of the G20, focuses on issues related to the digital economy and highlights the central role of digital transformation in the broader context of economic and social growth.

The other aspect to be taken into account include the geopolitical and geostrategic situation that necessitates adequate data management, the minister emphasized.

Plate expects that the third G20 DEWG meeting, led by his ministry as the representative of Indonesia, can find a suitable formula and foundation for fair and egalitarian cross-border data flow management for all parties.

During Indonesia's G20 Presidency, the G20 DEWG was initiated as a result of elevation from the 2021 G20 Digital Economy Task Force (DETF) led by Italy.

Discussion on the digital economy's main issues will encourage Indonesia to place four principles of management -- lawfulness, fairness, transparency, and reciprocity -- in every discussion that it held.

Specifically for the discussion on cross-border data flow management, the fourth principle is deemed to be the most important to be emphasized, so that everyone looks out for one another.

"It relates to reciprocity within the scope of bilateral relations for data management," Plate remarked.

The third G20 DEWG meeting is planned to be held in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, on July 21-22, 2022.

The meeting will discuss cross-border data free flow and data free flow, with trust as the main topic.

Earlier, the G20 DEWG had discussed two other issues: connectivity and post COVID-19 recovery as well as digital skill and digital literacy.
