Lombok Barat (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin prohibited agricultural officials and the local government from sending cows infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD) to other areas as sacrificial animals.

"To the officers, please pay attention. Do not let sick cows be distributed to other areas during this sacrificial season," Amin stated after conversing with members of the Livestock Farmers Group (KTT) Reyan Baru in Gerung sub-district, West Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Thursday.

Some 327 cows were infected with FMD in Reyan Baru KTT, but all of them were declared cured.

"From the explanation I received, around 327 cows here were infected with FMD. They had been cured by the hard work of all breeders and administrators assisted by the Ministry of Agriculture," Amin stated.

He later urged breeders and the regional government to stop distributing sick cows infected with FMD to other regions. Only healthy cows were allowed to be sent to other regions ahead of Eid al-Adha.

The vice president highlighted the government's concern over the FMD outbreak in several areas.

"The government is accelerating vaccination to prevent the spread of FMD, focusing on vaccinating the healthy ones. Livestock infected with FMD will also receive intensive treatment," Amin remarked.

NTB Province is the second most affected area after East Java Province where livestock infected with FMD had been recorded at 115,478 heads and those that recovered reached 21,096 heads, or 18.2 percent. However, NTB has a high cure rate, where the number of livestock infected with FMD reached 45,738 heads and the cure rate at 53 percent, or 24,284 heads. For West Lombok District, data as of June 28, 2022, states that the number of livestock affected by FMD reached 12,593 cattle, while 6,441 cattle recovered.

Regarding the vaccination to prevent FMD, 2,400 doses arrived in NTB that will then be distributed in the districts where the livestock had been most affected by FMD.
