Jakarta (ANTARA) - The construction of the Banjardowo Jombang Landfill Site (TPA) in East Java province will be ready to be used in the near future, an official from the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry informed.

“Currently, it has been completed by 99 percent. The remaining preparation is system synchronization," director general of human settlements at the ministry, Diana Kusumastuti, said when contacted here on Saturday.

The landfill is targeted to be completed by mid-July 2022, hence it can be utilized immediately by the Jombang district regional government, she added.

Human resources operational training for all waste management equipment and facilities can also be carried out soon after the completion of the TPA, she said.

The TPA was an open dumping site for waste, so the ministry revitalized the facility into a sanitary landfill site so that its operation can help mitigate water, soil, and air pollution caused by waste disposal.

The development of the Banjardowo Jombang TPA was undertaken jointly by the Indonesian and German governments through the Emission Reduction in Cities-Solid Waste Management (ERIC-SWM) Program.

The PUPR Ministry assisted in the development of the design and the procurement of heavy equipment for the landfill and supporting facilities.

The construction of the TPA was begun by state-owned contractor PT Adhi Karya Tbk in June 2020 with a budget of Rp185 billion (US$12.36 million).

The facility can manage 110 tons of household waste per day to serve about 895 thousand residents of Jombang district.

Meanwhile, through the implementation of the ERIC-SWM Program, the waste dumped into the TPA will be sorted according to its type for recycling.

Plastic waste will be recycled into briquettes and other materials, while organic waste will be processed into compost.

In addition, the Banjardowo Jombang TPA will manage leachate -- the water produced from waste — to prevent it from polluting the surrounding environment.
