All provinces on Java Island and some provinces on Sumatra Island have been categorized as red zones, with findings of FMD (cases) in districts or citiesJakarta (ANTARA) - All provinces on Java Island and some provinces on Sumatra Island have been categorized as red zones for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) based on data recorded as of July 18, 2022.
Coordinator of the expert team of the FMD Handling Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito, conveyed the information at an online press conference, which was followed from here on Tuesday.
As many as 263 districts and cities in 22 Indonesian provinces have been affected by FMD, he said.
"All provinces on Java Island and some provinces on Sumatra Island have been categorized as red zones, with findings of FMD (cases) in districts or cities," he added.
Adisasmito said that provinces such as Lampung, West Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi, where less than 50 percent of districts and cities have been affected by FMD, have been categorized as yellow zones.
“Then, there are green zones, which means that there have been no reports of FMD cases in these provinces, such as Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku provinces," he added.
The zoning determination is based on the results of intensive processing of data on cases reported by regional governments, which was obtained from a combination of laboratory test results and physical examinations of clinical symptoms of FMD in farm animals, he explained.
The government has continued its efforts to curb FMD transmission through biosecurity, testing, vaccination, treatment, and conditional slaughter, and is expecting the public to remain alert and concerned about the FMD outbreak and jointly prevent the spread of the disease by implementing biosecurity.
To check FMD transmission, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a vaccination program for livestock from Sidoarjo district, East Java, on June 14, 2022.
Vaccine doses are being prioritized for healthy animals that are at high risk of infection, such as animals at livestock breeding centers, community-owned dairy farms, dairy cooperatives, and beef cattle farms.
