"We must be aware of this golden period (the first one thousand days of life) because brain cells are building stronger sensitive tissues," Hartanto noted during a webinar, witnessed here on Thursday.
The doctor stated that the first one thousand days of life was a critical phase in a child's life, as during that period, there is rapid cell growth in a child's brain.
The brain of a newborn only develops about 25 percent, but once the baby turns two years of age, the brain formation accelerates by up to 80 percent, and when it is about to turn six, the speed will go back to just 15 percent, Hartanto elaborated.
He said parents are more concerned about providing nutrition to prevent stunting in children. However, he cautioned that a wrong parenting style will cause children to suffer from behavioral disorders that continue until adulthood.

According to Hartanto, a flawed parenting style results in the release of stress hormones in children that may trigger behavioral disorders.
Hence, he emphasized that parents should understand and optimize the development of children's brain tissues by fulfilling the needs of stimulation, nutrition, and affection.
"We cannot give stunted children only nutrients, so that they get back to normal. We will not be able to, as we have to (help) develop the (brain) tissues that are optimal," he stated.
Furthermore, Hartanto drew attention to two other crucial phases of child development: until the age of six months and from birth until six years of age.
"Energy from nutrition is required to build (optimal, healthy brain tissues). This is important, so that the brain can develop optimally. It is also influenced by hormones as a result of the parents' affection," he added.
