It reflects the common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities (CBDR–RC) principle...Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions to realize an environmentally friendly global civil aviation sector, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said at a high-level meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
"Indonesia has a great interest in the development and recovery of an environmentally friendly global civil aviation sector, considering that Indonesia has 251 airports and is projected by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to become the world's fourth-largest air transportation market by 2036," he remarked virtually at the meeting, which was accessed from here on Thursday.
The development and recovery of the aviation sector have become a priority since the sector directly supports tourism, trade, and industry, which are important for post-pandemic national economic recovery, he added at the ICAO high-level meeting on the feasibility of a long-term aspirational goal for carbon emissions reductions in international aviation (HLM - LTAG).
He also urged developed countries to be more active in decarbonizing the aviation sector.
Developing countries must be allowed more flexibility in implementing the emissions reduction effort so that it does not hinder the sustainable development of the national civil aviation sector, the minister added.
"It reflects the common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities (CBDR–RC) principle, which is recognized in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)," he said.

Furthermore, he highlighted a number of efforts that could be implemented to encourage the realization of environmentally friendly aviation, such as increasing the production and availability of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) at affordable prices.
He also underlined the importance of funding and technical cooperation for reducing CO2 emissions.
The ICAO HLM-LTAG meeting was attended by 27 officials at the ministerial/deputy ministerial level and 600 delegates from 112 countries and international organizations.
The meeting is being held in a hybrid format in Montreal, Canada, from July 19 to 22, 2022, and aims to generate recommendations for a draft global commitment on reducing CO2 emissions in the international civil aviation sector.
In addition to Sumadi and other officials from the Transportation Ministry, the Indonesian delegation also consisted of officials from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Foreign Affairs Ministry, state-run air traffic control service provider AirNav Indonesia, and state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina.
