I hope that (Indonesian) transportation human resources can overcome the problems faced by both the national and international community.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Transportation Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMP) of Indonesia's Transportation Ministry is collaborating with South Korean universities to improve the quality of education and graduates of universities under the purview of the ministry.

The BPSDMP’s Jakarta School of Maritime Transportation (STIP) held an International Lecture Series 1 themed “Collaboration Towards Sustainable Maritime Education and Human Resource Growth” on Monday. Professor Sun-Young Lim from the Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), South Korea, was invited as a speaker at the lecture.

It is necessary to advance national education and human resources collaboration with foreign universities, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said here on Monday.

“One of them is with (universities in) South Korea, which has an advanced transportation system. South Korea has also provided many opportunities for our sailors and students to work and study in their country's maritime industry," he noted.

Currently, there are various challenges in the maritime transportation sector, which must be resolved to meet the public's expectations for better sea transportation services, he said.

"I hope that (Indonesian) transportation human resources can overcome the problems faced by both the national and international community. Hence, transportation human resources who are technology-savvy and able to communicate well with various languages are required," the minister said.

Furthermore, he lauded the professor and the KMOU staff for their contribution to the development of cooperation in maritime education between the two countries.

On the same occasion, head of the BPSDMP, Djoko Sasono, said that his party is continuing to encourage universities under the purview of the ministry to become more innovative and adaptive in developing educational curricula that can meet the expectations of the national and global community.

“(The event held) today is the first part of the strategic partnership between BPSDMP and KMOU. We hope the collaboration can also be conducted by other universities," he added.

Sun-Young is a marine biosciences professor and is currently serving as the dean of KMOU.

At the lecture, he spoke on a number of topics related to the strategic vision, mission, and future prospects of university education in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, academic and non-academic collaborations to improve the quality of education and human resources, as well as the strategy to advance maritime logistics services.
