Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government managed to maintain the status of 15 provinces as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) green zones, FMD Handling Task Force Expert Team Coordinator Wiku Adisasmito stated in an online press conference on Tuesday.

The FMD virus has infected livestock in 22 provinces, and the figure has not increased in the last week.

"This means that within the last week, we managed to keep 15 provinces (in the) green (zone)," he explained.

The effort to protect these 15 provinces from being infected should continue to be bolstered, he remarked.

"Meanwhile, two additional cities that are infected are Bandar Lampung and Bengkulu. To this day, there are 265 infected districts or cities," he stated.

Adisasmito noted that conditional slaughter became one of the most effective ways to prevent spread of the FMD virus to other regions.

According to data, both Bali and Central Kalimantan have a higher conditional slaughter percentage as compared to the number of sick livestock, which are 99.46 percent against 551 cases and 46.98 percent against 645 cases.

This can serve as an example for other regions within the context of FMD handling in order to support the effort, he stated.

In addition, the government is committed to providing aid to alleviate the burden of farmers affected by the spread of the disease.

This is done with reference to the Agriculture Ministry's Animal Farming and Health Directorate General Decision Letter No 08048 /Kpts /PK .300 /07 /2022.

Farmers, whose livestock were conditionally slaughtered, will receive aid worth Rp10 million for cows or buffalos, Rp1.5 million for sheep or goats, and Rp2 million for pigs.

"The amount of aid that is given became a concrete effort by the government to support farmers amid the difficult situation that they encounter, so that their economy can recover," he explained.
