"The tremor did not have the potential to cause a tsunami," Angga Yudha, a forecaster of the Meulaboh-Nagan Raya meteorology, climatology and geophysics office (BMKG) said here on Sunday.
The quake's epicenter was located at 4.25 degrees northern latitude, 95.70 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 56 km, and 44 km southeast of Aceh Jaya. Indonesia lies on the Ring of Fire along the northeastern islands adjacent of New Guinea and the Alpide belt along the south and west from Sumatra, Java, Bali, Flores, and Timor.
The motion of the fault generates numerous small earthquakes every day.
