Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA News) - A flood triggered by high rainfalls hit a number of villages in Aceh Jaya district, Aceh Province, on Sunday.

Coordinator of Aceh Jaya disaster task force Rizal Dinata said the high rainfalls caused Teunom river to overflow at around 05.00 a.m. on Sunday, inundating a number of villages.

The flooded villages included Gampong Baro, Paya Baro, Blang Baro, Teupin Ara, Tanoh Ano, Alue Ambang, Panton, Tanoh Manyang, Sumira and Pulo Tinggi.

The flood also cut off land communication to other villages, including Pasie Tulak Bala, Rambong Payong, Pasie Pawang, Paise Geulima, and Pasie Timong.

No residents fled to other areas following the flood, he said.

"In total, the flood-stricken villages are home to more than 1,000 people. We hope rains in the upper reach of the river will not fall so the flood will not spread to other areas in our district," he said.

He said Aceh Jaya, Teunom subdistrict in particular was almost flooded every year particular if heavy rains fell in Tangse subdistrict, Pidie district

Teunom is the largest and longest river in Aceh.

No casualties or material damage were reported in the flood. (*)
