The public kitchen is form of a synergy between the Demak Navy Post, volunteers of the Al-Qur'an Interpretation Council (MTA), the Demak Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), and the joint Search and Rescue (SAR) Team.
Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Ali in a press release of the Naval Information Service received, here on Sunday, urged all mariners to always help people who are experiencing difficulties, such as people facing flood in the Demak area.
"The Indonesian Navy's mariners must be able to help the community wherever they are and on duty, especially emergencies like natural disasters that occur in the country," Ali said.
He explained that the public kitchen operation is to help both affected residents who chose to stay at their homes and the evacuees.
He said that basic necessities such as food and bottled water have been provided in the kitchen.
The Navy hoped that the public kitchen can be useful for the victims, as the disaster hit during the Ramadan Month.
The Demak District has been submerged since Thursday (March 14). The Demak Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Acting Head, Agus Luhur, said that the flood was caused by high rainfall on Wednesday (March 13) night.
The rain increased the water discharge from the upstream area.
The flood was getting worse due to the collapse of six embankments in the local river.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said that the broken embankments were located in the Wulan River which is on the border between Demak and Kudus Districts.
