Cooperation between Indonesia and Cambodia in preventing human trafficking must be stepped up.Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met with Chief of the Cambodian Police Neth Savouen in Phnom Penh on Tuesday to discuss cooperation in preventing human trafficking.
"Cooperation between Indonesia and Cambodia in preventing human trafficking must be stepped up," Marsudi said, according to a Foreign Ministry press statement that was accessed from Jakarta on Tuesday.
The meeting came nearly three days after the Cambodian police released 55 Indonesian migrant workers who were held captive by an online scammer in Sihanoukville on July 30, 2022. Seven more Indonesian migrant workers were released on Sunday.
Cases of similar online scams have frequently been recorded since 2021.
During the meeting at the Cambodian Police Headquarters in Phnom Penh, Marsudi highlighted four issues requiring cooperation with the Cambodian Police, including the handling of the 62 freed Indonesian migrant workers and the remaining Indonesian workers in the country.
In addition, both sides also discussed cooperation in law enforcement and measures to prevent such cases from recurring.
In response to Marsudi's request, Savouen expressed the Cambodian Police's full commitment to cooperate with Indonesia.
The two sides also agreed that technical teams of the two countries' police forces will soon hold a meeting to discuss a wide range of issues, including joint investigation cooperation, mutual legal assistance, appointment of contact persons to handle the same case quickly, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two police forces on the handling of human trafficking cases.
