Depok, West Java (ANTARA) - University of Indonesia (UI) along with T20 and Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) of Oxford University discussed efforts to overcome global poverty through holding the summer program "Multidimensional Poverty Measurement and Analysis."

UI's Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UI) Teguh Dartanto stated in Depok on Thursday that the Summer School 2022 is included in the G20 side event series as part of the real contribution to the country.

Dartanto said, this summer program discusses concepts, practical applications, and policy reviews for multidimensional poverty measurement.

"We hope that all participants would have the ability to determine relevant policies, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Congratulations (to) the participants on establishing a good relationship to collaborate in the future," he remarked.

The topic of poverty was selected since it is a crucial problem in developing countries, especially as the conditions had worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Think20 (T20) Lead Co-Chair, Prof. Bambang Brodjonegoro, Ph.D., poverty, especially in developing countries, needs to be comprehended, as it is the most important problem that hinders development.

Poverty can trigger limited access to clean water, sanitation, health, and quality education, the professor pointed out.

In fact, he said, poverty is listed as the number one priority of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"Without growth as a tool of development, it will be difficult to reduce poverty whose impact is significantly felt by the whole society," Brodjonegoro explained.

Meanwhile, Indonesia still uses a basic indicator, the poverty line, while the factors that cause poverty are more than just social and economic issues.

Hence, the meeting also discussed the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), which is a measurement concept that observes the dimensions of poverty more broadly.
