Jakarta (ANTARA) - The construction of healthy houses for 76 families affected by the flash floods in Sentani sub-district, Jayapura district, Papua, in 2019 has reached 90 percent completion, Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini has said.

It is hoped that the houses for flood victims would be inaugurated on Independence Day on August 17, 2022, she said here on Thursday.

Rismaharini informed that for the construction of the homes, the ministry received solar cell assistance from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS Surabaya) Electronics Engineering alumni, who also helped build the electricity network.

"The houses in Sentani are almost finished. The infrastructure is already 90 percent finished," she said.

In addition to building houses for flood victims, the Ministry of Social Affairs is also planning to construct houses for community empowerment, she added.

It has built 28 earthquake-resistant housing units for communities living on the Indonesia-Timor Leste border in Wini Sub-district, North Timor Tengah District, East Nusa Tenggara, she informed.

The ministry has also implemented agriculture, animal husbandry, and weaving programs in the region, and established a student learning center and provided Internet and computer facilities to support children's learning.

Moreover, the ministry has also implemented programs to handle extreme poverty. Currently, 22 housing units are being built in Malang, East Java, for people who are economically disadvantaged and whose homes have suffered severe damage, Rismaharini said.

"We will continue our work in several areas to handle extreme poverty cases. Extreme poverty is described as poor conditions in their economy and household as well. Later, we will help them to have access to a better economy," she remarked.

Efforts to open up economic access to eradicate extreme poverty depend on the potential and willingness of the people who receive assistance. There are several businesses suitable for extreme poverty eradication including laundry, food stalls, livestock, and agriculture, she added.
