Jakarta (ANTARA) - Millennials globally are more interested in sustainable investments, or ones that have a positive impact on society and the environment, Head of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Mahendra Siregar, said.

"Based on a study, millennials invest more in sustainable investments compared to older generations," Siregar pointed out at the “LIKE IT: Sustain Habit in Investing, Invest in Sustainable Instruments” event, here on Friday.

Global investors aged 18–36 years have said that on average, 41 percent of their investment portfolios comprise sustainable investments, he explained.

Thus, millennials are investing in the products of companies and institutions that have sustainable business activities, ensure social welfare, and apply the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

In Indonesia, young investors such as millennials and Generation Z have also begun to dominate the capital market, and accounted for 81 percent of the 9.3 million capital market investors in the country as of June 2022, Siregar said.

One of the main drivers of young investors entering the Indonesian capital market is the significantly improving level of investment literacy, supported by various information channels such as social media.

Meanwhile, digitalization has also made the process of securities transactions in the capital market easier and more affordable, such as the opening of a securities account, which can now be done online, through sales agents at financial technology companies.

Meanwhile, Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) President Director Inarno Djajadi said that several milestones in the Indonesian capital market have been achieved due to collaboration and synergy between the OJK, Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO), and all Indonesian capital market stakeholders.

"As of mid-2022, some 3,893 capital market educational activities were carried out throughout Indonesia, which were attended by 312,906 participants," Djajadi pointed out earlier at the GI BEI Gathering 2022 on June 27, 2022.
