The public trust in the police institution is our common gamble
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo instructed police officers to endeavor to regain public trust by not committing law violations that taint the law enforcement institution.

"The public trust in the police institution is our common gamble. Hence, we need to underline this issue, and I hope (officers) can take follow-up actions," Prabowo stated in his remarks to open the meeting with nationwide high-ranking police officers on Thursday.

The public trust in the institution is declining following the murder of Brigadier Yosua Hutabarat, identified with the initial as J, which implicated high-ranking police officers, he noted.

The general said that before the Brigadier J murder case, some survey institutions highlighted that the public trust in the police remained high from December 2021 until mid-July 2022.

He pointed out that public trust in the police showed an uptick trend on the occasion of the 76th Bhayangkara Day last July, which was celebrated by various events involving all levels of society and had drawn a positive response from residents.

Despite the plummeting public trust due to the Brigadier J murder case, the police's commitment to thoroughly investigate the case partially restored the public trust, he said.

The establishment of a special team, suspension of several high-ranking police officers, the investigation into an alleged ethics code violation, and the naming of suspects demonstrated the police's commitment to unveil the case, the police chief remarked.

"There are some other activities relevant to the case that we are continuing right now because the police institution and dignity are now at stake," he stated.

Prabowo affirmed that in keeping with President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi's) instruction, the police will continue to investigate the case transparently.

"There will be no cover-up. We will unveil all based on facts and reveal the truth. This will be our guide (in the investigation)," the general remarked.
