Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly urged residents to register their intellectual property with the ministry's Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) to ensure state protection of their properties.

"There are many forms of intellectual property. There are brands, patents, geographical indications, copyrights, geographical designs, collective properties, cultural knowledge, and other forms," Laoly stated here, Friday.

Apart from ensuring state protection, registering intellectual property will also guarantee economic benefits to the holders, he noted.

The minister encouraged residents to register their intellectual property with the ministry before other parties claim the property for their own benefit that could cause unnecessary conflicts and legal actions.

The directorate general has also provided online services to facilitate residents keen to register their intellectual property, Laoly remarked.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of the commemoration of the ministry's 77th Anniversary, the minister designated child singer Farel Prayoga as the ambassador of intellectual property for students.

"We want our children to pursue their dream because they can do so if they have potential and talents," Laoly stated.

He said that the Banyuwangi artist has the potential to assist the government to promote the intellectual property to the general public, particularly after he was invited to perform in front of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and attendees at the ceremony to commemorate Indonesia's 77th Independence Day anniversary on Wednesday (August 17).

Designating the intellectual property ambassador status to Prayoga, who rose to stardom after his cover of the Javanese-language song "Ojo Dibandingke" (Do Not Compare) became a hit, is expected to persuade other residents to register their intellectual property, he remarked.
