Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin expressed hope that the sports industry not only creates healthy lifestyles and outstanding athletes but also contributes to economic growth.

Amin conveyed the statement while inaugurating the opening of the 39th National Sports Day (Haornas) 2022 at Batakan Stadium, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, on Friday, according to a press release received here on Friday.

"We want to create healthy lifestyles and outstanding athletes. However, more than that, we want to develop a sports industry that can contribute to economic growth. This vision needs synergy between the central government and regional (governments), the world of business and industry, media and academics, and the wider community, including athletes and coaches," he remarked.

Amin, who also serves as head of the Central Coordination Team of the Grand Design of National Sports (DBON), noted that the spirit of developing national sports must continue to be encouraged, as it provides a sense of meaning in life, where sports are able to unite differences since they promote equality.

Moreover, sports can build discipline, toughness, sportsmanship, and cooperation, all of which are useful in the lives of individuals, society, nations, and states, he added.

"Sports shape the character of the nation. They can even be a means of maintaining world peace," he stated.

He considered this year's Haornas, which is commemorated with the theme of "Together Create Champions," to be an invitation for all Indonesians to increase participation and achievement in sports.

The vice president called on educators and coaches to continue to make serious efforts to create national sports talents, so that the nation's dignity can be raised through the achievements of athletes on the world stage.

Hence, he emphasized the importance of using sports science seriously to help athletes excel.

"I invite all stakeholders to collaborate in building a modern and conducive ecosystem for the growth of the national sports industry," he remarked.
