The Montreal Protocol aims to reduce the consumption of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are greenhouse gases with a high global warming potential value
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, drew attention to the crucial role of the Montreal Protocol to tackle climate change that can slow down climactic disturbances.

"The Montreal Protocol aims to reduce the consumption of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are greenhouse gases with a high global warming potential value. The protocol aims to increase energy efficiency through the Kigali Amendment that can slow down climate disturbances," the minister noted in her remarks at the commemoration of World Ozone Day here, Friday.

The minister referred to the statement from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the commemoration of 2022 World Ozone Day that said the Montreal Protocol is a successful multilateral action.

"Montreal Protocol is a global environmental treaty that has been universally ratified and firmly implemented. It is a strong example of multilateral action," she added.

Marking 35 years since the conception of the Montreal Protocol, commemorated as World Ozone Day every September 16, Nurbaya stated that the impact of the implementation of the Montreal Protocol had extended to climate change. Hence, global collaboration and partnership were deemed necessary to face climate change.

This aligns with the theme of this year's commemoration of "35 Years of Global Cooperation to Protect Life on Earth."

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Montreal Protocol was able to remove nearly 99 percent of ozone-depleting substances and gradually recover the ozone layer, she stated.

Hence, Minister Nurbaya called on the people to commemorate World Ozone Day as a momentum to implement the Montreal Protocol with the Kigali Amendment in facing the challenges of climate change.

The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by removing several substances causal to its depletion. Indonesia had ratified the protocol three decades ago.
